On 12th August 2018, Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) announced the launch of the Huawei Nova 3i smartphone for UAE market.
There are three variants of the Huawei Nova series – Huawei Nova 3, Huawei Nova 3i and Huawei Nova 3e. In the range of Huawei smartphone, Huawei Nova 3i is a mid-level priced phone with a lot of features of the high-end smartphones.
Huawei Nova 3i is powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) for its overall functions and especially the camera. It has a dual camera in front of the smartphone (24mp + 2mp) and with AI it can adjust to the environment with advanced Algorithm to natural and appealing.
Body & Specification
With a dimension of 7.52cm (W) x 15.76cm (H) x 0.76cm (D) and weighing 169gms which includes a non-removal battery, it is very sleek and stylish smartphone with rounded edges to fit in your hand. The screen is made of TFT LCD (IPS panel) and size of 6.3 inches and Full HD resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels.
It uses Android 8.1 (Oreo) OS with the Huawei’s EMUI 8.2.0 as a user interface. It uses Huawei’s Kirin 970 chipset with 4GB RAM and 128GB ROM for storage.
It has dual SIM Card Tray Slot and one of the slots can be used for additional storage with microSD card supporting up to 256GB memory. As for the network, it can support 2G/ 3G/ 4G LTE
It comes with the dual camera on the front and as well as on the rear. The front camera has 24 megapixel (color) + 2 megapixels (colour), F/2.0 aperture, supports fixed focal length and the rear camera has 16 megapixels (colour) + 2 megapixels (colour), F/2.2 aperture, supports autofocus (phase focus, contrast focus).
It has 3340mAh battery which can be charged with microUSB type B and can last more than a day.
The Review
The review unit was used for more than 2 weeks and the first thing which attracted me is the looks, colour of the product. It has dual tone colour which you can see the difference when holding it in the light you can see the rainbow of colours which is reflected back due to the glossy casing. The casing of the smartphone has a nice glossy finish even it made out of plastic composite material. The edges of the phone are rounded and it helps from avoiding damages on sudden drops up to a certain extent.
Due to the glossy, shiny finish, the smartphone is prone to fingerprint smudges and on drop can show chip off of colour. It is better to use the free translucent protective case with the protective film to protect the screen which comes along the smartphone in the box.
The volume rockers and power buttons are on the right-hand side of the smartphone and the SIM card tray are on the Top left-hand side of the smartphone.
With the 19.5:9 ratio display, the bezel of the phone is thin and screen almost merging with the background of the scenery which you are capturing. The only thing you will notice is the top area where it houses the dual lens cameras and sensor. The front dual camera has 24 MP + 2 MP lens with F/2.0 aperture. Interestingly this would be the first Huawei smartphone which has Front camera higher megapixels compared to rear primary cameras.
The back panel of the Huawei Nova 3i houses the fingerprint sensor on the top centre and the dual camera in the vertical position which has 16 MP + 2 MP with f/2.2 aperture lens. The Dual camera lenses little protruding from the back panel, so it better to use the translucent phone casing to protect the cameras.
Now coming to the operating system of the Huawei Nova 3i, it has the latest Android 8.1 (Oreo) with the Huawei’s EMUI 8.2.0 as a user interface. So with Android 8.1, the Huawei Nova 3i has all the interesting new features of the high- end mobile like the AI beautification, creamy bokeh for portraits, AI recognition up to 500 scenes. Special studio lighting selfies, 3D Emojis and many more.
Huawei Nova 3i is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 710 processor with 4GB RAM and with the usage of GPU turbo which makes the gaming experience more fluid, so far it works with games like Legends: Bang Bang and PUBG Mobile and more games are supposed to be released. GPU Turbo is a graphics processing accelerator technology the re-architects how graphics are processed on the system level.
Kirin 710 also helps in better for more accurate facial brightness, contrast for selfies on the front cameras and scene-by-scene optimizations for shots taken on the rear and enhancing the photography effects.
Normally I provide the benchmark test for each smartphone review but this was not possible as the review product unit giving me was with a customized version which didn’t allow me to run the benchmark test even twice tried hard reset of the smartphone.
Huawei Nova 3i has an interesting AI shopping assistant with a two-finger long press on a photo will prompt the device to identify products and provide links to purchase what’s retrieved by the AI search function.
As mentioned earlier with AI function, now the photo gallery automatically categories according to various themes. Based on the content, the pictures will be divided into 15 large categories and 100 small genres including food, scenery, documents, accessories, sports, and animals.
Coming back to the Camera, other than the effects, AR and Ai functions, and the Huawei Nova 3i camera for photography performed very well in daylight and colours of the image were pretty vibrant with nice contrast. The Bokeh effect in the portrait mode was great with sharpness on the focused object. As for the photography during night time, there was little noise can be seen but compared to product range and pricing, it is one of the best smartphones in the range.
As for video recording, the rear camera, records FHD 1920 x 1080 (60FPS), I wish it could have recorded on higher resolution and wish it had image stabilization. It has focus object tracking which is good for portrait videos but again was a little disappointed with the noise level. It has a slow-motion recording option which can record 2 options of slow speed, 480FPS, and 120FPS but on 720p ( 1280 x 720). Als,o you have to make sure there is enough light to capture in slow motion. So ideally it is good to shoot in outdoor in the daytime or brightly lit area indoors or at night. But with memory storage of 128GB, it quite enough to record good amount of videos and photographs.

With a battery of 3340mAh battery which can be charged with microUSB type B and can last more than a day. Strangely, Huawei Nova 3i doesn’t have the USB Type C charging pin but has the 3.5mm headphone pin for music. It has the speaker grill on the bottom beside the microUSB type B.
Conclusion
Huawei Nova 3i is a very good smartphone for the price, the phone has features of the top end smartphones. The dual colour variants make the phone very rich and stylish. With Dual camera for Selfies, it can give very nice creamy Bokeh effect and focus on your face. It has a quick and sharp focus system. It has colour correction and with Oreo as OS, it uses AI to categorize the images as the difference of gender, animals, etc.
With 128GB ROM space, it is a good smartphone for the price and tough competitions to its competitors. Gaming is fluid with accessible GPU Turbo which comes along the Kirin 710 chipset.
With all the AR and AI effects and function, it is a very young, stylish and perfect companion for the teens and fashion conscious people.
