SHOKZ began in 2004 and entered the headphone market as AfterShokz in 2011. It became SHOKZ in 2021.
The brand first became popular for bone-conduction sports headphones. However, its newer open-ear earbuds use air conduction, placing a speaker close to the ear canal.
SHOKZ entered true-wireless open-ear audio with OpenFit in 2023. It later introduced OpenDots ONE, its first compact clip-on earbuds.
OpenDots 2 continues that idea with upgraded sound, controls, microphones and water resistance. It also retains the open design that keeps users aware of their surroundings.
I had already reviewed the SHOKZ OpenFit Pro. Therefore, connecting OpenDots 2 and navigating the Shokz App felt familiar.
SHOKZ recently launched OpenDots 2 in the Middle East. The company sent me the Pearl White model and two OpenDots ONE Star earring sets for testing.
These jewellery-inspired accessories add personality and a touch of glamour. They should appeal to users who want their earbuds to complement their style. The Shokz’s earbuds was tested for more than 3 weeks.

Design, Construction and Comfort
The SHOKZ OpenDots 2 combines an elegant charging case with lightweight, jewellery-inspired earbuds. The charging case has a smooth, pebble-like shape with rounded edges, making it comfortable to hold and easy to carry. The same ergonomic design continues across the earbuds, with softly rounded speaker and battery units. The Pearl White finish and gold accents add a premium appearance. Meanwhile, the flexible JointArc, soft silicone covering and clip-on construction provide a secure fit without blocking or placing pressure on the ear canal.
The SHOKZ OpenDots 2 – Charging Case
My Pearl White charging case has a shiny, pearlescent finish. A polished gold SHOKZ logo on the front matches the thin trim around the lid.
The words “OpenDots 2” appear in a subtle matte finish on the back. The pairing and reset button is positioned below it.
The USB Type-C charging port sits on the bottom. The 590mAh case also supports Qi-certified wireless charging.
SHOKZ claims two hours for a full wired case charge. Wireless charging needs around three and a half hours.
The earbuds provide up to ten hours of music, while the case extends total playback to 40 hours. A five-minute charge supplies up to two hours of playback.
The SHOKZ OpenDots 2 – EarBuds
Each earbud consists of two rounded sections connected by a flexible clip. The speaker rests near the ear canal, while the battery section sits behind the ear.
The exterior combines ABS plastic, silicone rubber and metal. A nickel-titanium structure inside the JointArc helps the clip adapt to different ear shapes.
Soft, contoured silicone covers the main contact areas. It improves grip while preventing hard components from pressing against the ear.
The premium design continues from the case. Thin gold rings surround the speaker and battery sections. The speaker grille has a darker copper-brass finish.
Each earbud weighs only 6.4g. I wore them continuously for three hours and did not feel heaviness or pressure.
The speaker remained near my ear canal, while the battery and control unit hugged the pinna from behind. Neither section pricked or hurt my ears.
The flexible clip held the earbuds securely without creating a blocked-ear feeling. Air continued flowing naturally around my ears.
This design is useful during exercise because users can remain aware of traffic, announcements and people nearby. The IP57 rating also protects against sweat and rain.
However, OpenDots 2 is not intended for swimming. The case has a separate IP54 rating, so users should dry the earbuds before charging.
Connecting OpenDots 2 to the Shokz App
Pairing was simple. I opened the case near my smartphone, and an automatic pairing prompt appeared.
My phone then opened its Bluetooth screen to complete the connection. I finished the activation inside the Shokz App.
The app displays the battery levels of the earbuds and charging case. It also allows users to switch upgraded Dolby Audio on or off.
Four preset equaliser modes are available, alongside custom sound profiles. Users can personalise the pinch and tap gestures.
Multipoint pairing connects two devices simultaneously. Other options include Find My Earbuds, firmware updates, audio preferences and Drop Alerts.
Smart Wear Detection can pause playback when the earbuds are removed. Dynamic Ear Detection makes the left and right units interchangeable.
Earbud Controls
The controls became easy after a short learning period. Users can tap the JointArc or pinch the rear battery section.
A double tap plays or pauses music. A single pinch can control playback or answer and end calls.
A double pinch skips tracks or rejects a call. Holding the pinch adjusts the volume. Several actions can be reassigned through the app.
The force sensor makes pinching deliberate and reduces accidental commands.
Audio Testing: Bass, Mids and Treble
I tested OpenDots 2 with English and Indian classical music. I also listened to pop, trance, R&B, rock and metal.
The sound was natural, clean and well separated. I could distinguish vocals, treble and bass without the presentation becoming congested.
Bassphere 2.0 uses two drivers, while MirrorPitch supports low-frequency output. In my tests, the bass was enjoyable and never felt completely flat.
However, it did not deliver the physical depth of sealed in-ear earbuds or over-ear headphones. That remains an unavoidable open-ear trade-off.
The midrange was particularly impressive. Vocals sounded natural, while Indian classical instruments retained their individual character.
Treble remained clean and detailed. At home, I could hear cymbal strikes, flute sounds and even a performer’s breathing.
Dolby Audio added space and weight to suitable tracks. Nevertheless, some listeners may prefer the standard presentation for simpler recordings.
Indoor Testing at Home
OpenDots 2 performed very well inside my house. At 50% volume, I could enjoy the rhythm and hear small details clearly.
My perceived balance was approximately 85% music and 15% surrounding sound. I could still hear birds chirping on my balcony.
This figure describes my listening impression rather than a laboratory measurement. It demonstrates how the earbuds combine entertainment with awareness.
I then sat approximately 1.5 metres from a running table fan. The noise masked some detail, and my perceived clarity dropped to around 65%.
Increasing the volume to 75% provided a better listening level. However, I remained aware of the fan and my surroundings.
Outdoor Testing in Traffic
I kept the volume near 50% during outdoor testing. The audio remained decent and cut through heavy road traffic sufficiently for casual listening.
However, loud external noise naturally competes with open-ear audio. Raising the volume recovers detail but reduces the awareness advantage.
OpenDots 2 does not provide active noise cancellation for music. Its microphone noise reduction aims to improve voice pickup during calls.
Buyers should not compare it directly with sealed noise-cancelling earbuds. OpenDots 2 prioritises comfort, airflow and environmental awareness instead.
Sleep Test With OpenDots 2
Like many music lovers, I sometimes enjoy drifting off to sleep while listening to music. Therefore, I also tested OpenDots 2 in bed.
The earbuds remained comfortable while I was lying down. The silicone-covered clip prevented hard pressure around my ear.
I could also lie on my side. However, pressure from the pillow moved the clip slightly and changed the speaker position.
The sound changed a little, but it remained enjoyable. I found the comfort benefit more important than this small positional difference.
The open design also lets users hear an alarm, doorbell or family member. Again, it should not be compared with isolating in-ear headphones.
