The Review
Design & Packaging

The Kingston DataTraveler 80 (64GB) USB 3.2 Type-C Flash drive is small and light and can be attached to a keychain.

As the name says itself “DataTraveler”. It is having a plastic body which comes in black and silver colour with the brand logo printed on one side. There are 4 different variants available in terms of the capacity of the storage of the drives – 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB.

The product comes in a dimension of 42.2mm x 15mm x 6.7mm. And as the company mentions it can operate under 0°C~60°C and storage temperature -20°C~85°C. Its product comes with a 5-year warranty with free technical support. It is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, 8, Mac OS (v.10.10.x +), Linux (v. 2.6.x +), Chrome OS.

Benchmark Testing
The Kingston DataTraveler 80 USB 3.2 Type-C Flash was tested on a various benchmark to check the Read & Write speed of the flash drive. On the packaging, it is mentioned 200MB/s Read speed and on all the benchmark, we tested it crossed the 200MB/s read speed.

On AS SSD Benchmark 2.0, the device got – 260.92MB/s read speed and write speed of 38.60 MB/s and it scored 46 and 9 and a total benchmark score of 72.

On ATTO Disk Benchmark 4.01, the device got – 251.4MB/s read speed and write speed of 38.60 MB/s. This test was done with the file size of 16GB

On Crystal DiskMark 8.0.1, the device got – 0.273 GB/s read speed and write speed of 0.071 GB/s and this was done on the file of 4GB.

Generally, the consumer would be checking the transfer speed (read & write) of the USB by doing manual transferring of data from a laptop to the USB and vice versa. By default, all the USB drives come in exFAT format which allows only up to 4 GB. So I formatted the Kingston DataTraveler 80 (64GB) USB 3.2 Type-C Flash drive into NTFS format to copy larger data

For the test, I copied a file of 6.3 GB software and a movie (Blu-Ray version) of 6.93 GB from the laptop (Asus Strix Scar II) into the Kingston USB 3.2 Type-C Flash drive. It got an average write speed of 35MB/s to 43MB/s for the data copying and 26MB/s to 32MB/s for copying the Blu-ray movie.
As for the transfer (read) speed from USB to Laptop, we got a very quick response in copying at 262MB/s to 270MB/s.
How to buy the right USB device?

As a media person, we have seen and have got various brands or non-branded USB drives for press releases or as a gift. Some of the devices come in various designs, styles like a mobile shape or wooden branded car shape, shiny stain steel looks and a lot more. These devices look very cool to carry around on your keychain or in your pocket but many of them fail to have the fast transfer speed or copy data.
Transferring Data with the new 2021 laptops

In the market, you will generally find the USB Type-A which is majorly compatible with most devices. But in 2021, device especially laptops are getting thinner and lighter and manufactures are providing USB Type-C ports. The Kingston DataTraveler 80 USB 3.2 Type-C Flash drive is a perfect product for such devices. The speed of USB Type-C and versatility of the port makes a better choice compared to the older variant USB Type-A.
Phone Backup & Date Transfer

Now, most of the latest Android smartphones are coming with a USB Type-C charging port and which also could be used for data transfer. Thanks to the latest Android OS, it supports direct backup and copying data facility via plugging in the USB Type- C port. Android support is not officially mentioned on the packaging but the Kingston DataTraveler 80 USB 3.2 Type-C Flash drive has worked for me and I could transfer the images and video from the Android smartphone to the Kingston Data Traveler 80 drive. I didn’t require any additional APP to download to do so.

(Please note: I had used Huawei P30 Pro for the testing and worked fine. There are chances, it may not work with older version of Android phones)
Conclusion

So overall, the Kingston DataTraveler 80 USB 3.2 Type-C Flash drive is a light, fast and great product. As per the benchmark and manual transfer test, the result exceeded its read speed mentioned on the packaging of 200MB/s. The price of the product is quite competitive compared to similar kind of drives available in the market. And it works with Android Smartphones for backup and data transfer without any requirement of an additional app.
