Introduction
USB drives remain one of the easiest ways to carry files between devices. However, they also create one major risk. Losing sensitive business or personal data can become a serious privacy problem. That is exactly where the Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 enters the picture.
This is not an ordinary flash drive focused only on storage capacity or transfer speed. Kingston designed the IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 for users who need an additional layer of protection while carrying confidential files.
Since 1987, Kingston Technology has built a strong reputation in the memory and storage industry. The company later expanded into encrypted storage through the IronKey portfolio. That experience is now reflected in the latest Locker+ 50 G2 series.
During my usage in the UAE, the IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 felt more like a professional business tool than a casual USB flash drive. It focuses heavily on encryption, password security, and controlled data access. At the same time, Kingston tries to keep the experience simple enough for regular users.
The question is simple. Does the Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 justify its premium pricing in the UAE market?
Packaging and First Impressions
Kingston keeps the packaging simple and professional. The box clearly highlights the hardware encryption capabilities and security-focused features. Inside the package, users primarily receive the USB drive and documentation with setup and security instructions.

The first thing I noticed was the compact size of the drive. The metal casing immediately gives it a premium feel. Unlike low-cost plastic USB drives, this one feels durable and professional.
The drive also includes a key loop, making it easy to attach to a laptop bag, office keys, or travel pouch. That may sound small, but users carrying important files daily will appreciate it.
This product clearly targets professionals rather than casual consumers.
Design and Build Quality
Compact Yet Professional
The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 follows a minimal business-oriented design language. Kingston avoids flashy RGB styling or aggressive patterns. Instead, the drive focuses on practicality and durability.
The metal body improves confidence while handling the device. It feels solid during everyday use and does not flex under pressure.
Even after repeated usage, the anti-smudge finish helped maintain a clean appearance.

Heat Management
During large file transfers, the drive becomes slightly warm. However, the temperature remained within comfortable limits throughout my testing.
This matters because encrypted USB drives often generate more heat compared to regular flash drives.
Setup Experience – One of the Most Important Parts of This Review
For security-focused products, setup experience matters more than raw speed numbers.

Thankfully, Kingston keeps the process relatively straightforward.
After connecting the USB drive to a Windows PC, the IronKey setup software launches automatically. Users can create passwords, configure security options, and enable recovery settings.
The drive supports:

- Admin password
- User password
- Passphrase mode
- Complex password requirements
- Virtual keyboard support
- Password visibility toggle
The interface looks clean and easy to understand. Even users without technical knowledge should complete the setup within minutes.
I particularly liked the password visibility option because it reduces setup mistakes during initial configuration.
Security Features Explained Simply – Hardware Encryption Matters
Many consumers assume password-protected folders provide enough protection. Unfortunately, software-level security can still become vulnerable in certain situations.

The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 uses AES 256-bit XTS hardware encryption directly inside the USB drive itself.
That means the encryption process does not depend entirely on the computer system.
In simple words, if someone steals the drive, accessing the files becomes extremely difficult without the correct password.
Additional Security Features
Kingston also includes:
- Brute-force attack protection
- BadUSB attack protection
- Crypto-erase functionality
- Multi-password support
If a user enters the wrong password more than 10 times, the drive automatically wipes all stored data to prevent unauthorised access.
This makes the device useful for:
- Business professionals
- Journalists
- Financial firms
- Government-related workflows
- Corporate travel users
- Content creators storing confidential footage
Real-World Performance Testing – File Transfer Experience
The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 was tested for drag-and-drop of 10.9 GB files. While transferring data from the laptop SSD to Kingston’s USB drive, I got speeds ranging from 125 MB/s to 63 MB/s. And while transferring the same data dump back from Kingston’s USB to the SSD Drive, I got speeds of 145 MB/s and 125 MB/s.
I transferred:
- 4K video footage
- RAW image folders
- Large ZIP archives
- Text files
The drive handled all of them without major slowdowns.
Encryption Impact
Without entering the correct password, I could not access any of the stored files. The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 maintained smooth performance during daily usage.
Opening encrypted folders and transferring files felt responsive enough for business workflows.
Cross-Platform Compatibility
The Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 supports both Windows and macOS systems. While I could only test it on Windows, Kingston includes a dedicated macOS setup file, ensuring compatibility across both platforms.
This flexibility becomes important for UAE professionals who frequently move between workplaces, meetings, and remote setups.
Daily Usage Experience
Built for Secure Mobility
The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 is not designed for casual users looking for basic storage. It is for important data/software that must be protected from open access. The drive delivers decent transfer speeds, but its primary focus is data security. If the USB is lost, stored data remains protected through password and passphrase authentication. During testing, I intentionally entered an incorrect password several times. On the seventh failed attempt, the software displayed a warning indicating that only three attempts remained.. If I continue, then on the 10th attempt, the data would be wiped out from the USB. This is due to the Brute-Force attack protection feature.
The IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 USB doesn’t have any IP rating, and Kingston also does not market the drive as waterproof, dustproof, or ruggedized.
Suitable for Middle East Market

However, the USB feature includes a metal-and-plastic casing, an Anti-Fingerprint coating, Enterprise-focused build quality, an operating temperature range of 0°C to 50°C, and a storage temperature range of -20°C to 85°C.
The drive is suitable for office environments across the UAE. However, I would not recommend leaving it exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods during the peak summer months.
After carrying the drive as a keychain for several days, I noticed how confidence changes when using encrypted storage. During daily use, the drive survived accidental drops from approximately 8 feet without any visible damage. However, I would not classify it as a rugged storage device designed for harsh environments.
