On 24th October, OPPO has announced the launch of its new Reno2 Series smartphones and Enco Q1 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones in the UAE at Armani Hotel Dubai. The Reno2 series included 2 smartphones:- Reno2 and Reno2 F. OPPO Reno 2 is the latest smartphone from Reno Series the first edition which was the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition and OPPO Reno. Compared to the earlier version the Reno 2 is much more advanced and latest feature with Quad camera and little bigger than the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition. Click here to see the review of OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition.
I got the OPPO Reno 2 smartphone for review and below are details of the device.
Body & Specification
The OPPO Reno edition has a dimension of 160 x 74.3 x 9.5 mm and weighing 185gms and body is made of an Aluminum frame with front glass (Gorilla Glass 6) and back glass (Gorilla Glass 5). It has 6.5 inches Dynamic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 x 2400 pixels display and with Screen-to-Body Ratio 93.1%. The OPPO Reno display includes the Hidden Fingerprint Unlock 2.0 that reads the finger contours of the thumbprint.
The back panel has the dual cameras which are housed in a vertical design with safety bump to protect the cameras.
The rear (main) Quad cameras – 48 MP, f/1.7, 26mm (wide), 13MP, f/2.4, (telephoto), 8 MP, f/2.2, 2 MP B/W, f/2.4 with Dual-LED flash. And the front side on the top has the Pivot Rising Camera that hides the front camera, earpiece, and front and rear flashlights – Single Motorized pop-up 16 MP, f/2.0.
The right-hand side has the power button and on the left-hand side, it has the volume rockers and the Hybrid Dual SIM tray which one of the SIM can be used for microSD, up to 256 GB.
The bottom side we have the 3.5mm jack, the USB type C charging pin and the speaker grill.
The configuration of the OPPO Reno review unit has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB ROM (Storage space) and has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset with built-in Adreno 618 GPU.
It has the latest Android Pie (9.0) for OS and OPPO’s own ColorOS V 6.1 for User Interface.
The package of OPPO Reno 2 smartphone is similar in design and size of the OPPO Reno which is big and long compared to the size of the smartphone. The striking feature is the rounded edges front Full display with a shiny back panel.
The device which I have received for review is the Ocean blue color but OPPO Reno 2 is also available in luminous black.
The package also contains transparent casing to protect the phone from damages and add more grip while using the device.
The OPPO Reno as design-wise is a classy, sleek-looking smartphone that can be used by any kind of consumer from corporate to a teenager. It has a full-screen display with a pivot rising camera that makes this smartphone unique design compared to the other smartphones available in the market.
OPPO’s Reno2 Cameras
With the Quad cameras set up on the back panel, you can click a 48 Mp wide-angle photograph with a 26mm lens and ultra-wide of 116° with 8MP with a 13mm lens, so now you can click a group of people from a distance or capture the panoramic view of the landscape. With Al feature in the camera, the camera app also includes a Scene Optimizer.
With the camera app, you can have 0.6x ( Wide angle), 1x (Normal), 2x and 5x with digital zoom 20x for photography and videography. The images clicked up to 5x zoom good but as you increase to further than 10x and max to 20x zoom the quality of the image deteriorates and you need a tripod or very stable hands to get the sharp image.
In the daylight, the cameras performed very well but I was a little disappointed in the low light photography as there was noise in the images
In video mode, the camera performed very well at the 2 preset levels (0.6x and 1x) in daylight but in a low light similar issue as mentioned above for photography.
As for the front (selfie) camera, the 16Mp single-lens performed very well and the Bokeh effect (F2.0 aperture) was good. The focus was quite fast and also has AI Beauty camera support and automatically suggest the exposure. The front camera is equipped with a soft light. When you take selfies in low-light conditions, it automatically adds light.
Also, the motorized pivot rising camera has it’s own protection if the smartphone is dropped, the pivot drops back into the device automatically protecting the camera but due to this function, the smartphone is not waterproof.
The OPPO Reno 2 has Dolby Atmos and you can experience it using the Earbud headphones which has the 3.5mm pin and comes along the package.
The built-in speaker of the phone is quite loud and good while playing the game.
Power and Performance
It has the latest Android Pie (9.0) for OS and OPPO’s own ColorOS V6.1 for User Interface. the new AI software on the OPPO Reno automatically optimizes battery, CPU, RAM, and even device temperature based on how you use your phone and continues to learn and get better over time. Leveraging AI-capabilities, OPPO Reno also learns how you use your device to launch your most frequently used apps faster.
With the 8GB RAM, latest Snapdragon 730 chipset with built-in Adreno 618 GPU, Android Pie, the performance was decent and while testing on different benchmarks, it scored quite good.
I have tested the smartphone 4 different benchmarks a) AnTuTu – 263206 b) AiTuTu – 92557 c) 3D Mark – Sling Shot Extreme – Open GL ES 3.1 – 2398 & Sling Shot Extreme- Vulkan – 2268 d) Pass Mark – System(14369), CPU Test (200535), Memory (22548), 2D Graphic (11665) & 3D Graphic (3267)
During the benchmark test, the smartphone temps average was 34 C degrees and under stress test, it shot up to 36.6 C degrees which is actually much better than other devices I have reviewed.
But there was a little visual effect jitter in the graphics rendering during the benchmark performance of the device.
It comes with a 4000 mAh battery which lasted almost 30 hours on average usage which can be charged with fast charging 20W (VOOC Flash Charge 3.0) USB Type-C cable.
As for protection and access to the smartphone, OPPO Reno has a hidden fingerprint sensor on full-screen display along with face detection, pattern and pin security access.
The device was loaded with Sniper 3D and Call of Duty app and it performed very well and the temperature of the device maintains the same, there was no lag in the graphics performance of the device.
OPPO’s Reno 2 is a great device with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB ROM/ Storage with Android 9 (Pie). With all the AR and AI effects and functions, it is a very young, stylish and perfect companion for the teens, gamers, businessman and fashion-conscious people. The design and style are unique for all the genders to use. The full-screen display is unique compared to other smartphones and the Motorized pivot rising front selfie camera with front and rear flashlights make the smartphone unique. With the Android Pie and latest development in AI, the OPPO Reno 2 has all the best features like Bokeh, scene optimizer and latest beauty AI.
The images clicked during the daytime has been crisp and sharp and colors are vibrant, with the Ai optimization the images were also color enhanced and sometimes look oversaturated compared to the actual object and color. But the output came out very appealing.
The newly improved Night mode or OPPO calls it “Night Goggle” has improved a lot compared to earlier OPPO Reno. The fine-tuning with the help of NPU Acceleration and capture of more light in the darkness has been able to perform quite beautifully compared to earlier OPPO smartphones and can say quite a competition to other competitor brands smart mobile with night shot facility.
Another improvement is the portrait mode with has impressive bokeh effect and can instantly recognize the object with Ai optimization and adjust the depth automatically and give a sharp and image with natural blurs look and but obviously if you want you can readjust the bokeh a manually too.
The smartphone is not waterproof but has a fast battery charging 20W (VOOC Flash Charge 3.0) and with 4000 mAh battery, it lasted almost 30 hours of average usage.
The OPPO Reno has Dolby Atmos and you can experience it using the Earbud headphones which has the 3.5mm pin and comes along the package.
The built-in speaker of the phone is quite loud and good while playing the game.
