On 6th January 2019, Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) announced the launch of the Huawei Mate 20 X smartphone for UAE market. It is a high-end smartphone with a big screen and most of all the features of the super powerful Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro smartphones.
There are three variants of the Huawei Mate 20 series – Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and now the latest Huawei Mate 20 X.
Huawei Mate 20 X is the biggest smartphone in the Huawei series of phones. Huawei says nearly 60 per cent of UAE smartphone users watch online videos on their devices daily, including nearly 50 per cent watching movies via their smartphones. Also, more than 80 per cent of the UAE’s smartphone users identify as “mobile gamers” including 86 per cent of users between 16- and 36-years.
Body & Specifications
With a dimension of 85.4 mm (W) x 174.6mm (H) x 8.15mm (D) and weighing 232 gms which includes a non-removal battery, it is a very sleek and stylish smartphone with rounded edges to fit in your hand. The screen is made of OLED panel and size of 7.2 inches and Full HD resolution of 2244 x 1080 pixels and with a density of 346-pixels-per-inch and 18.7:9 ratios. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.
It uses Android 9.0 (Pie) with the Huawei’s EMUI 9.0 as a user interface. It uses latest Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset + GPU – Mali-G76 MP10 with 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM for storage.
It has Dual SIM Card Tray Slot and one of the slots can be used for additional storage with microSD card supporting up to 256GB memory. As for the network, it can support 2G/ 3G/ 4G LTE
It comes with the triple cameras on the rear (Leica Triple camera:40 MP + 20 MP + 8 MP). The front camera has a 24 MP lens.
The main camera can shoot video at 2160p@30fps, 1080p@60fps, 1080p@30fps (gyro-EIS), 720p@960fps and front camera can shoot video at 1080p@30fps. Huawei Mate 20 X features Leica optics, dual-LED dual-tone flash, panorama and HDR.
The Review
When you open the package of Huawei Mate 20 X smartphone, the striking feature is the sheer size of the phone which has a display of 7.2 inches. The edges of the phone are rounded and it helps from damages on sudden drops up to a certain extent.
The package also contains transparent casing to protect the phone from damages and add more grip while using the device.
The device which I have received for review is the midnight blue edition but Huawei Mate 20 X is also available in Phantom Silver colour.
The engraved glass back panel filters the colour layer to produce the unique textures glittering in the light and the finish is made to be non-slip and anti-fingerprint.
The Volume rockers and power buttons are on the right-hand side of the smartphone and SIM card tray is on the top left-hand side of the smartphone.
With the 18.7:9 ratio display, the bezel of the phone is thin and screen almost merging with the background of the scenery which you are capturing. The only thing you will notice is in the top area where it houses the sleek earpiece speaker and single lens camera in dew drop shape. The front camera is 24 MP, f/2.0 aperture with 26mm (wide).
The back panel of the Huawei Mate 20 X houses the triple cameras with dual-LED dual-tone flash in a rounded square shape. Leica Triple cameras are 40 MP (Wide Angle Lens, f/1.8 aperture) + 20 MP (Ultra Wide Angle Lens, f/2.2 aperture) + 8 MP (Telephoto, f/2.4 aperture), supports autofocus (laser focus, phase focus, contrast focus), supports AIS (Huawei AI Image Stabilization). The square shape panel is little protruding from the back panel, so it better to use the translucent phone casing to protect the cameras. Below is the round fingerprint sensor, this major difference between the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X. Mate 20 pro has the fingerprint sensor in-screen display.
Now coming to the operating system of the Huawei Mate 20 X, it has the latest Android 9.0 (Pie) with the Huawei’s EMUI 9.0 as a user interface. So with Android 9.0, the Huawei Mate 20 X has all the interesting new features of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro like the AI beautification, creamy bokeh for portraits, AI recognition up to 500 scenes. Special studio lighting selfies, Night mode, 3D Emojis and many more. Kirin 980 also helps in better for more accurate facial brightness, contrast for selfies on the front cameras and scene-by-scene optimizations for shots taken on the rear and enhancing the photography effects.
A perfect smartphone for gaming and entertainment
Huawei Mate 20 X is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor with 6GB RAM and with the usage of GPU Turbo 2.0* which makes the gaming experience more fluid. On a test run with games like Asphalt 9 and Traffic Rider, the phone had no issues in delivering a smooth, stable gaming experience. Thanks to the big OLED screen and with dual symmetrical speakers at both ends of the device, which has a super high dynamic range up to 40 dB, it is quite loud with clear Highs (trebles), Mids (Vocals) and Lows (Bass) giving a depth for a fully immersive audio experience. But of course, you can’t expect very low bass but compared to other smartphones in the market, Huawei Mate 20 X is on the top. With 5000 mAh battery, you longer hours to play games and view online entertainment.

Is it a good smartphone for a businessman?
A businessman requires a long-lasting battery, storage, protection and most important fast response from a smartphone. Huawei Mate 20 X with its powerful chipset, RAM and storage, it could be a perfect phone for daily usage in a corporate environment. With 7.2 display screen, you will have better viewing of presentation, product demo videos or even creating one with right mobile applications. On the benchmark test of Huawei Mate 20 X smartphone result were similar to high- end phone. On AnTuTu Benchmark test it got a score of 264661 and on 3D Mark Test it got a score of 3566 on Sling Shot Extreme – Open GL ES 3 and 3510 on Sling Shot Extreme – Vulkan. Another important point was the temperature maintain around 32°C under stress test. The HUAWEI Mate 20 X features HUAWEI Supercool, the world’s first liquid multi-dimensional cooling system with Vapour Chamber (VC) and Graphene Film used in smartphones. It conducts heat away fast, keeping your device cool for smooth gaming and for entertainment.
As mentioned earlier with AI function, now the photo gallery automatically categories according to various themes. Based on the content, the pictures will be divided into 15 large categories and 100 small genres including food, scenery, documents, accessories, sports and animals.

Huawei Mate 20 X for Photography
Coming back to the Camera, other than the effects, AR and Ai functions, and the Huawei Mate 20 X cameras for photography performed very well in daylight and colours of the image were pretty vibrant with nice contrast. The Bokeh effect in the portrait mode was great with sharpness on the focused object. As for the photography during night time, thanks to the powerful triple cameras and the images clicked on normal mode and as well as night mode result was excellent.
Please note: While clicking image in night mode, make sure the object you are clicking is not moving and you should be able to click with steady hands. To get a perfectly sharp image, it is advised to use a stand, basically the camera is clicking on various combination of apertures and software creates the best option with the AI function.
Huawei Mate 20 X for Video
As for video recording, the rear camera can record 4k UHD 3840 x 2160, 1080p FHD (18:9) 2160 x 1080, 1080p FHD (60fps) 1920 x 1080 and less. It also has the option to store in H265 and H264 format. It has AIS (Huawei AI Image Stabilization) which helps to a smoother quality video. It has focus object tracking which is good for portrait videos.
Please note: beautification effects work only at 720p.
Now you can record slow motion with 3 options of slow speed – 1080p FHD (120fps), 720 HD (240 FPS) and 720P (960 FPS).
For the best result, make sure there is enough light to capture in slow motion. So ideally it is good to shoot in outdoor in the day time or brightly lit area indoors or at night which will reduce the noise in the video. But with memory storage of 128GB, it quite enough to record good amount of videos and photographs.
With a battery of 5000 mAh battery which can be charged with 3.1, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector and it has got TÜV safety-certified HUAWEI SuperCharge2 offers high-speed charging. Huawei Mate 20 X has the 3.5mm headphone pin for music, so good news of the Audiophile listeners, you can use your personal headsets on the phone as it supports Hi-res audio files. It has the speaker grill on the top and bottom which makes it a stereo effect while listening to music. The speaker’s volume is quite loud compared to other phones.
Conclusion
Huawei Mate 20 X is a very good smartphone for the price, the phone is a high-end smartphone with all best features for gaming, watching online entertainment. The built quality and colour makes the phone very rich and stylish. With triple cameras with AI support makes this smartphone one of the best in the market, as for the selfies, the single 24MP lens can make difference with the Ai function which can give very nice creamy Bokeh effect and focus on your face. It has a quick and sharp focus system.
With 128GB ROM space, it is a good smartphone for the price and can run for the money to its competitors. Gaming is fluid with accessible GPU Turbo 2.0 which comes along the Kirin 980 chipset.
With all the AR and AI effects and function, it is a very young, stylish and perfect companion for the teens, gamers, businessman and fashion conscious people.
