My-Experience-at-the-TECHNOVATION 2025 -Talks--Disruption,-Transformation,-and-the-Future-Ahead
Attending the recent TECHNOVATION 2025 sessions was nothing short of inspiring. I could not attend the morning session but I had the opportunity to attend the afternoon two session after lunch. As I sat in the packed hall, two powerful topics unfolded before me — disruptive innovation and smoke-free transformation. Both shared one clear message: The world is changing fast, and those who adapt will lead the future.
The first session, “Disruptive Innovation: Shaping Economies, Shifting Lives, Forging Futures,” featured Magnus Lindkvist, a renowned futurologist, author, and trendspotter. His talk was a wake-up call to how we view turbulence and uncertainty.
The second session, “The Evolution of Smoke-Free Products,” brought together leading voices from Philip Morris International (PMI) — Christos Kiritsis, Richa Rustagi, and Patrik Hildingsson — discussing how innovation and science are driving a global shift toward a smoke-free world.
Turbulence Is the New Normal
When Magnus Lindkvist began his talk, I could instantly feel the energy in the room shift. He spoke about how we are living in a time where pandemics, climate change, technology, and geopolitics collide — all at once.
He called this period “turbulence” and described it not as something to fear but as fuel for innovation. His words struck me:

“Turbulence isn’t dangerous — what’s dangerous is using yesterday’s logic.” That line stayed with me. I realized that it’s not chaos that threatens us, but our refusal to change. Magnus emphasized that great ideas are born in messy times, and those who adapt to uncertainty will create the future.
Adaptability Defines Greatness
Magnus reminded everyone that greatness cannot be planned. He said, “Mediocrity can be budgeted for.” That one sentence made the audience smile, but it carried a powerful truth.
In a world obsessed with plans and strategies, he encouraged us to stay flexible, curious, and courageous. He urged us to look for what he called “caterpillar ideas” — early, imperfect, or even strange concepts that might one day transform into something extraordinary. Listening to him, I felt a renewed respect for risk-takers — people who dare to start small, experiment, and accept failure as part of growth. His talk reminded me that innovation isn’t just about intelligence; it’s about character, resilience, and courage to be misunderstood.
The Future Doesn’t Wait
One of Magnus’s strongest messages was that the future doesn’t follow schedules. It doesn’t arrive politely or gradually — it erupts.
He explained that progress rarely follows a planned path. It happens suddenly, across industries and regions, often without warning. “Those open to surprise,” he said, “are best positioned to lead it.”
That moment summed up everything about modern innovation — it belongs to the bold, the curious, and the ones who embrace change, not fear it.
PMI’s Mission to Create a Smoke-Free World
Right after Magnus’s powerful session, I attended the discussion on The Evolution of Smoke-Free Products hosted by Philip Morris International (PMI).

As someone who follows technology-driven transformations, I was curious to see how a company once known for cigarettes was now leading one of the world’s biggest health and innovation shifts.
Christos Kiritsis, Richa Rustagi, and Patrik Hildingsson shared PMI’s clear vision — to replace every cigarette for adult smokers who don’t quit with scientifically backed, smoke-free alternatives.
Their approach wasn’t about denial or guilt; it was about realistic change through innovation. Christos summed it up perfectly:

“If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you smoke, quit. If you don’t quit, change.”
A Portfolio Built for Choice
What impressed me most was PMI’s multi-category portfolio, designed to meet different lifestyles and preferences. They’ve developed:

- Heat-not-burn products like IQOS ILUMA I and Bonds by IQOS
- Oral smokeless options like ZYN
- E-vapor devices such as VEEV ONE and VEEV NOW ULTRA
Across all categories, the key innovation is eliminating combustion. By removing burning, PMI reduces exposure to harmful chemicals by up to 95%, making these alternatives significantly less harmful than traditional cigarettes.
The science behind it is strong, and the results speak volumes.
From Innovation to Impact
PMI’s success story is one of the best examples of how innovation can truly change an industry. In just eight years, its smoke-free product IQOS overtook Marlboro’s revenue — something unimaginable a decade ago.
In ten years, IQOS crossed $10 billion in net revenues, became profitable within five years, and converted over seven million adult smokers to smoke-free alternatives globally.
Listening to these numbers felt like watching disruption in real-time — innovation not for luxury, but for health.
The UAE’s Role as a Regional Leader
As someone based in the UAE, I felt a sense of pride hearing how our country has become a pioneer in smoke-free transformation.

Richa Rustagi highlighted the UAE’s milestones proudly:
- 2018: First country in the region to regulate IQOS, launched via Dubai Duty Free.
- 2019: First official launch in the GCC.
- 2020: Opened the first IQOS Boutique in the GCC.
- 2021: E-commerce activation through iqos.com.
- 2022 and beyond: Became PMI’s first multi-category market in the MEA region.
Richa summed it beautifully:
“The UAE didn’t just adopt global trends; it helped export them.” It’s clear that forward-thinking policies and openness to innovation have positioned the UAE as a model for transformation.
Sweden’s Example: A Smoke-Free Generation
The speakers also highlighted Sweden as a success story. Through decades of science-based harm reduction, Sweden has achieved two smoke-free generations.
Supported by 330 scientific studies and over 50 years of research, products like ZYN became the first FDA-authorised nicotine pouch.
This shows what can happen when governments, scientists, and industries work together with a common purpose.
