The visuals in games are produced by static frames, which are generated by the CPU, drawn by the GPU and then fed to the monitor. These frames are shown to the user in quick succession, and how rapidly the frames are shown is represented by the frames per second (fps) metric. The higher the monitor’s refresh rate, the quicker it can refresh the panel to display different frames.
