Introduction
Samsung, a global leader in electronics, has made significant strides in the smartphone market. Their journey began in 2000 with the launch of a feature phone, but it was the Galaxy S series in 2009 that catapulted them to the position they are right now. Launched in 2019, the FE series quickly gained popularity for offering flagship-level features and performance in a more affordable package. The latest smartphone launched, Samsung S24 FE, continues the legacy of providing many flagship features at affordable prices.
The Review
Design & Specification
The Samsung S24 FE measures 162.0 x 77.3 x 8.0 mm (Model No – SM-S721B/DS) and weighs 213 grams. It has a 6.7″ flat FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. The body has a Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus+), a glass back (Gorilla Glass Victus+), and an Armor aluminum frame.
Samsung has a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. It has ~ a 385ppi density with a 120Hz refresh rate, is HDR10+ certified, and is 1900 nits (peak). The device has a 19.5:9 ratio with an ~88.0% screen-to-body ratio.
Main Camera details
The Samsung S24 FE has triple cameras: 50.0 MP + 12.0 MP + 8.0 MP. It has autofocus and OIS and apertures of F1.8, F2.2, and F2.4. The camera has an Optical Zoom of 3x, an Optical quality Zoom of 2x (Enabled by an Adaptive Pixel sensor), and a Digital Zoom of up to 30x.)
Body Details
The right side of the body has volume rockers and a power button, which doubles for Bixby (voice assistant). The left side doesn’t have any buttons. The bottom side has a USB Type-C port with a mic and speaker. On the top, you have the dual SIM Card Tray, MIC; just above the display, you have the earpiece, which doubles as a speaker when holding the phone horizontally.
The phones come with NFC and support Samsung Pay—MST and/or NFC Membership cards. The device supports Wireless Charging and has a battery of 4700 mAh.
Testing the Cameras
When I received the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE smartphone, I used it to click images in daylight and at night, to shoot pictures and videos, and even to test the device’s heating, which has always been an issue with Samsung phones.
Selfie Camera
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Fe has a 10 MP, f/2.4 Selfie camera, which performs very well. The colours of the images were great, and the selfies were good. There are two modes – 1x and wide angle. The wide angle is not very wide but captures slightly more than the 1x mode. The camera has instant face detection and focus. You can click selfie motion image or video. You can use a timer to click a snap and flash mode, brightening the screen as light.
Under shooting mode, you can click images and videos by pressing the volume button, voice commands, floating shutter button and showing your palm (hand gestures). The selfie camera has video gyro-EIS stabilisation. The front camera can shoot videos at 4K@30/60fps and 1080p@30/60fps.
Primary Camera
Let us talk about the main cameras, which have triple cameras. The main cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Fe performed very well. However, as a reviewer and heavy user of smartphone cameras, I always look forward to having images clicked by the smartphone camera be as realistic as the actual surroundings. The AI technology and effects added to the software in the system produce the digitally reproduced images we see on the smartphone or computer screen.
The primary camera can record 8K video recording at 30 fps (7680×4320) and 4K UHD recording at 30 fps, 60 fps and 120 fps slow-motion (3840×2160). The cameras can shoot FHD at 240 fps & 120 fps, and 60Fps 30 fps. It supports HDR10+ recording, has a digital zoom of up to 30x, and 50MP still photos while playing 8K video. The primary camera sensor captured the images and reproduced them with vibrant colours. Under the photo and video mode, you have presets of 0.6, 1x and 3x. Under the video mode, you have super steady ON/OFF mode, and you can use it to record QHD & FHD mode, which can record 60 fps and 30 fps. The Still and Video can be shot in 9:16, 4:3 and 1:1 ratio.
The camera clicks 50 MP, which clicks 8160 x 6120 @72Dpi image, and file size 9MB. I have clicked the moon, and AI segmentation boosts the clarity to bring out the clarity of the moon.
Samsung Photo Edit Features
The Samsung S24 Fe comes with the latest Samsung AI features, which identify objects, scenes, and light and correct the colour and intensity of the lighting. It has a Google Circle feature, by which you can choose an object like a handbag or flower and get information. It also suggests buying options and websites.
AI Colour Correction
The AI colour correction, especially at night, was sometimes good, but I found too much colour and light manipulation. For example – I clicked an image of my red car in a less lit area, and the AI corrected the lighting and exposure and brightened my car’s image and red colour. But again, for a person like me, Samsung has the Pro mode, in which I can choose the intensity, focus, and exposure and click the image I want to produce to my satisfaction.
Portrait Studio
Samsung has an AI feature called Portrait Studio. In this feature, you can click a Selfie or choose an image from your gallery. Choose the magic wand sign in the middle bottom buttons and get the Sketch image option. On the right side, you will find the Portrait Studio. On clicking the button, you get options like Comic, 3D Cartoon, Watercolor, and Sketch. The images created are pretty interesting, and some are funny. If you don’t like it, you can regenerate and try your luck. It is fun for the new generation to create new DPs or share them on Social media. The Samsung S24 Fe also has a single short 3-second video (MP4), which you can use for social media. You can also create an Insta- slow motion video.
Samsung S24 Fe Power and connection
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Fe released in this region has the Exynos 2400e (4 nm) processor, which scored excellently. The transition, opening, and closing of the apps happened with ease. It comes with a 4700 mAh battery that can last more than a day with heavy usage of calls, surfing the internet and watching videos.
The device I got for review is the 8GB RAM with 4GB RAM Plus, which comes with 256GB ROM. The S24 Fe works on Android 14 OS with 6.1 UI. It has a Dual speaker setup for Stereo and comes with Bluetooth 5.3, A2DP, LE, NFC, and Zoom-in Mic, which makes it practical for recording videos. The S24 Fe supports screen mirroring and can connect to Samsung Ecosystem’s “Smart Things,” which you can use to connect to your TV, computer, projector, etc.
It connects with Samsung DeX and Samsung Wireless DeX, and you can multitask and control it. It supports Fast Wireless Charging, 25W wired, PD, QC2, 50% in 30 min, and Wireless 15-watt (Qi/PMA) charging. It also has PowerShare (reverse charging).
Benchmark Test Results
The Samsung S24 Fe was tested on various benchmark apps. The Geekbench 6 GPU scored a Single-core Score of 2004 and a Multi-Core Score of 6420. 3DMark scored Wildlife – MAXED OUT, Wildlife Extreme – 3733, Steel Nomad Light – 1862, and PCMark – 17986. Geekbench AI scored a Single Precision Score of 2568, a Half Precision Score of 2578, and a Quantized Score of 4175. The AI Benchmark Score was 583.
Overall Verdict
The Samsung S24 Fe is an excellent smartphone for the price. It has most of the features available on the Samsung S24 Ultra smartphone. My device came with 8GB RAM with 4GB RAM Plus with 256GB storage. The benchmark score was perfect for the price range. As for the physical appearance, the smartphone comes with an Aluminum brush steel frame. The display comes with an AMOLED display, which is quite bright and visible in the bright sunlight. Glass front (Gorilla Glass Victus+) protects the display and back panels. The smartphone comes with an excellent camera system. The images reproduced with AI facilities created amazing images with sharpness, colour correction and light.
So, the Samsung S24 Fe is perfect for the new generation who want all the AI and support from Google’s features.
