UAE-based Medad Technology today unveiled the world’s first ultrasonic Shisha – NESTA, at the 2nd annual World Vape Show held at Dubai World Trade Centre addressing the health and environmental threats associated with shisha smoking.

Developed and produced locally, NESTA uses the patented ultrasound technology to aerosolize pharma-grade nicotine into a cool mist, ensuring that no dangerous chemicals or heavy metals are present in the aerosol, and removing the dangers posed by inhaling traditional shisha as well as e-shisha.

Traditional shishas, when burning or heating tobacco at a high temperature can release up to 6000 chemicals, of which at least 100 are known to cause smoking-related diseases. They also pose a much greater risk to health than combustible cigarettes, with one hour of shisha smoking resulting in the inhalation of 100 to 200 times the amount of smoke inhaled from a single cigarette.
With NESTA, there is no heating or burning of tobacco, which means no harmful chemicals are produced. Furthermore, while the amount of carbon monoxide detected in one gram of hookah tobacco is around 143 mg, the level of carbon monoxide emitted by NESTA is zero.
Aside from the health and environmental benefits, Nesta adopts a patented algorithm that produces mist droplets, so fine and evenly distributed that the smoking experience is much smoother.
As NESTA is an IoT device with Bluetooth connectivity to a dedicated mobile application, it also enables the user to monitor their nicotine intake, giving them a holistic view of their usage and smoking behaviour.

Mohammed Alshaiba Almazrouei, Chief Executive Officer of Medad Technology, said, “NESTA’s vision stems from recognizing the popularity and cultural relevance of shisha smoking in the region while addressing the huge negative impact it can have not only on people’s health but also on the environment. With NESTA, we want to provide users with a safe and enjoyable shisha smoking experience using pioneering ultrasound technology to eliminate the harm caused by heated tobacco.”

Currently, in the final stages of development, the company is in the process of acquiring registration under both the EU’s Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) and the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), along with the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA). Although not yet on the market, once in production NESTA will be made available in the UAE before being rolled out to other markets, including the UK and Europe.

Medad Technology has invested US$50 million over the past four years to develop, manufacture, and test its ultrasound technology, and secure regulatory approval in the UAE and international markets. The company plans to invest a further US$100 million over the next three years in clinical trials, smoking cessation research and product development across its other sectors.
