I had the opportunity with Marvel fans to watch the first UAE and maybe 1st Middle East premiere screening of “Captain Marvel” in Dolby Theater, Reel Cinemas at Dubai Mall. So thank you Dolby Cinemas, Marvel Studios, Walt Disney and Reel Cinemas.

Honestly, I had not read about “Captain Marvel” in my childhood and got me interested after seeing the end part in the Avengers: Infinity War, when Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) using a modified kind of pager to call Captain Marvel before he turns into dust and was curious to know more about the Superhero or Superheroine.

Thanks to Wikipedia, I have learnt there were various versions of “Captain Marvel” in comics including a trial in which DC Comics sued Fawcett Comics for breach of copyright, claiming Fawcett’s Captain Marvel was too similar to Superman, the latter stopped publishing Captain Marvel. In the late 1960s, Marvel gained the trademark “Captain Marvel” with their first series.

Respect to Late Stan Lee

The famous Late Stan Lee

The famous Late Stan Lee

The best part I liked and appreciated is the formation of the Marvel Studio logo at the start of the movie with the famous late Stan Lee images and videos of his cameo roles in the earlier marvel movies and a thank you note. Everyone in the theater clapped and cheered for him.

About the Marvel Studios “Captain Marvel” movie

This is the first female-led Marvel movie and perfect go along with the current trend of women power and equal rights in the entertainment industry which we have already seen recently in Awards shows. Marvel Fans have been clamouring for a Black Widow standalone movie, it took a full decade and 20 Marvel Cinematic Universe films for the franchise to produce a single movie with a woman protagonist. So looks like this would be the answer “Captain Marvel”.

Jude Law as Yon-Rogg

Jude Law as Yon-Rogg

The movie starts on Hala, the homeworld of the haughty Kree (a race of aliens who were the villains in the first Guardians of the Galaxy). Our hero (Brie Larson) is not yet known as Captain Marvel or by her human alias Carol Danvers; she’s merely a space cop named Vers, a member of an elite shock troop in the Kree Starforce led by Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), a charming but jaded mentor who keeps nudging her to keep her emotions in check while on the job. But she’s plagued by memories of human past, one she can’t puzzle out even in chats with a collective being called the Supreme Intelligence (Annette Bening, perfectly cast). So our hero ends up on Earth trying to figure it out—and it takes her most of the movie to do it.

The actual fun start when Brie Larson ( Space cop Vers) lands on Planet earth which is known to them as planet C-53, she crash-landed in mid-90s America in Blockbuster Videos store while following the Skrull led by the leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Skrulls are shapeshifters and they can change their appreance to any characters they want.

Here Brie Larson meets young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who still has his left eye and also Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) who has recently joined S.H.I.E.L.D.

Hats off to the director and screenplay by Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, they have been able to create nostalgic hilarious moments about 90’s with RadioShack, dial-up internet, web searches via AltaVista, and grindingly slow CD-ROM drives to play an audio file and off course background songs of Nirvana, Garbage, No Doubt, Hole, the Smashing Pumpkins and others. Also funny moments with Nick Fury and the Cat, the cat has an important role in the movie.

The movie has an inspiring story about people around you who may push you down and keep telling you, you can’t do it and you have to fight the odds and come out as a winner. So the director shows some memory clips of Carol Danvers memory flashes, fragments of what appears to be a lost Earthling identity. There are glimpses of an unhappy childhood, a cruel father, a Top Gun-style military training in the US air force alongside a loyal friend Maria (Lashana Lynch) and how with her own will power she turns from Carol Danvers to Captain Marvel.

There are other well-known artist in this movie but was not given too much importance as per their acting capabilities like Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser. But of course, script demands importance to Captain Marvel.

The movie is about the introducing Captain Marvel to the Marvel Fans so when we see the Avengers: End Game, we know her powers and why did Nick Fury message her before he turned into dust. As per the movie, she looks like a very powerful ally for the Avengers who can help to turn the table on Thanos in the next big budget awaited movie which is expected to release in April 24th 2019. The Captain Marvel movie is about Woman power, inspiring story about keeps trying till you succeed and if you have the will to win nothing can stop you. Even in a small glimpse of war, she stops Ronin the Accuser attack on earth and he also decides to deal with her later, so we may expect more movies about Captain Marvel. The movie is well directed, scripted and good CGI for the budget allocated for the movie as we have heard the budget was low compared other Marvel Studios movies.
