2nd April 2018: I had the opportunity to watch the movie ” A Quiet Place” directed by  John Krasinski at #Novocinemas at Ibn Battuta Mall. This was a special screener before it releases on 5th April 2018.

About the Movie

The movie starts with showing 89 days passed by and it is desolated town with the supermarket with foods and medicine lying around and looks like a scenario of the The Walking Dead scene. There is a notice board with missing people names and photo which look like it has been there for a long time.

Here is a family Lee ( John Krasinski) with wife Evelyn ( Emily Blunt) and their 3 kids Marcus Abbott (Noah Jupe), Regan Abbott (Millicent Simmonds) and Beau Abbott (Cade Woodward) are collecting food and medicine. They all are communicating with each other in sign language or whispering in very low voice. Beau Abbott being a child goes to pick up a space shuttle toy from the rack and the toy is about to fall and Lee comes and grabs the toy in mid-air before it could make a noise. Here you get an idea, something is there they are scared and they are trying to avoid making any kind of noise which can attract something and there is shown fear in their eyes.  As they leave the place, Regan Abbott (Millicent Simmonds) decides to give the toy without the battery to his b

rother Beau Abbott but Beau takes the toy and also the batteries. While the family is shown walking barefoot on the sand down on the road, Beau Abbott being a kid, switches on the toy plane and in split seconds, some kind of creature comes out of the bushes and grabs the kid and disappears.

The movie tagline “If they hear you, they hunt you.” give a good idea what does movie say about keeping quiet. It is about fear from making any kind of sound or even talking in little loud which attracts alien creatures who cannot see or smell but has a very powerful sense of hearing. The Alien creatures look like a thin long skeleton with Watermelon type of head which can open up to receive the faint sound, it has long limbs which reminded me of Freddy Krueger hands but walk like a four-legged spider. It is very quick, fast and makes bone crushing noises.

The director and cameraman give us clues what is the family facing danger. From the start of the movie, there are things shown on the camera which make you more intrigued about the movie. Even in a scene when they are playing monopoly they are rolling the dice on the thick cloth to dampen the sound. There is a whiteboard in the basement which Lee has prepared about the Alien character and question mark on the weakness.  The movie has very less dialogue most of the acting skill is shown with their expression and sign language. Elder daughter Regan Abbott (Millicent Simmonds) who is shown as a deaf girl with defective hear impaired aid (who is actually really deaf in real life) has delivered awesome acting skills like her earlier movie – Wonderstruck. Emily Butt who is shown pregnant with her fourth child has created chills with her acting especially when the creature is very near and same time she is in labor pain with bleeding foot. Lee (John Krasinski) who holds the family and does everything to keep the family safe, he even tries to create a new hearing aid via books for his deaf daughter Regan which will become the solution for the weakness of Aliens.

Things which will make you ask questions about the film

The things which were not very clear is how come everyone has died, where is the army or navy. Why does Lee have use only morse code trying to communicate with the world? How do they have electricity to light up their home.  How come waterfall sound can dampen the voices (as water is a good conductor of sound) and as these aliens could hear from a long distance, can they only hear human voices then how come it attacks the kid with toys noise and why aliens are not affected by nature sounds. Looks like Aliens are like the Librarian who doesn’t like any noise. Near the climax when there is water seeping in the basement where Evelyn ( Emily Blunt) has just delivered a kid, the alien could not hear her behind the water falling screen.  Ok! I understand, the director wanted to create the intense moment but something didn’t match to the first half of the movie.

Conclusion

The movie was shown in #Novocinemas 7 star theater screening which has a lovely plush spacious button operated easy single seater sofas. The comfort level is awesome, felt like going to sleep than watching the movie.

About the movie: It is different kind of horror movie, set in little future were aliens have killed most of the human being. As you see the movie, you may find it slow but slowly the silence creeps under your skin. A family of four are trying to stay alive by keeping quiet. The movie has very fewer dialogues, hats off to the direction and camera work. The storyline is based only on the family and how they are keeping themselves alive from the alien creatures. The only other character in the movie was an old man for few scenes and he is also killed. The movie has family bonding, emotion, stress, fear, jump scare moments and a fast ending which was a quite quick way to end.  Make sure you watch in a theatre with good sound.
